When I first heard about Mamma Mia, the Broadway musical cobbled together from a thin storyline based on a string of tunes by ABBA, the Swedish rock sensation of the 70s and 80s, all I could do was groan, thinking that Mamma Mia would crash and burn in a spectacular way. But, I'm pleased to say that I was wrong. Mamma Mia has turned out to be a smash Broadway musical, and it is... Read More

I remember very well the popular 1970 - 1980s band ABBA and how their songs were upbeat and uplifting. For the last few years the sounds of this band have been recaptured with the Broadway musical production of Mamma Mia. I have never seen the play but a good friend of mine was able to catch a performance of this Broadway musical on a stage in Las Vegas. She said that... Read More
Its funny that catchy and simple music from the 70's group ABBA can turn into a broadway smash hit like Mamma Mia. I used to sing their songs everyday growing up and wanted to be Agneta, the blonde lady in the group. Now that the hit makers Benny Anderson and Bjorn have found their way back into our hearts through Judy Craymers smash hit Mamma Mia, you can't help but be... Read More

I've never been a fanatic of the Broadway musical itself, but I am a fan of costumes, particularly Broadway costumes. And while I may not pay much attention to a musical, I'm certain to be sitting in the audience with my fashion analysis at the ready to pull out a stream of Broadway costume criticism, which brings me to this post.

There are some Broadway costumes that scream inspiration while others serve as an inspiration of other sorts, yes, even the terribly bad can serve as an inspiration...an inspiration of what not to do. Take Mamma Mia for example. I know it's set in the seventies, but the seventies weren't that bad. After all, Cher came to worldwide prominence in the seventies, and she's the ultimate fashion chameleon. Back to Mamma Mia though: my point is that even in the seventies you could be stylish and fashion forward. The Mamma Mia characters (the actual characters, not the actors playing them) have no more of an excuse to be dreadfully dressed while living within a Broadway musical, than I do sitting at my desk writing. Well actually, I may not be sitting at my desk much longer if I see those lycra jumpsuits one more time; it will certainly drive me into the black hole where fashionistas convene to keep sane while others commit their heinous fashion crimes. There's no rule that says the Mamma Mia characters couldn't have been funky, groovy, happening, and still fashionable, so they definitely should have been.
Now where are my Broadway tickets? I'm ready to see more Broadway musical costumes!
