The Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová-starring movie 'Once', which won the Oscar for Best Original Song with 'Falling Slowly' in 2007, is to be made into a Broadway musical.
Directed by John Carney and set in Dublin, the film told the story of two musicians, played by Hansard and Irglová, who meet and eventually make a recording together.
The film was a hit in US, where a successful marketing campaign that branded it as a 'date movie' performed well at the box office.
Tony-winning producers John N Hart Jr, Jeff Sine and Fred Zollo have acquired he theatre rights and intend to bring it to the Broadway musical stage for the 2010-11 season.
Hansard/Irgolvá songs which didn't make the final cut for the original film are to be added along with material from the film. Producer Zollo hopes writer/director John Carney would play a creative role in the Broadway musical.
Zollo told Variety Magazine that he had picked the rights up well before the Oscars, adding: "It was one of those lucky breaks."
