A Broadway musical is one of the most distinct experiences that New York City has to offer.
Enter Time Square and you may confront enticing billboards for various Broadway musicals, such as Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, and Les Miserables. Broadway musicals are clearly one of the contributing factors to what makes the Big Apple a unique experience.
Therefore many people- tourists and natives alike- want to take part in all the entertainment. Interestingly enough, few people know how to dress for the occasion.
First off, you must consider that New York is a fashion capitol (along with Milan, Paris, etc). Therefore, it's important to understand that the baseline for fashion is much higher than in other locations in the United States, such as the Midwest.
When going to a Broadway musical, it's important to choose a dressy, but not overly formal outfit. You may see a wide range of attire. Many people wear an outfit that matches the ambiance of the restaurant they had dinner at before the musical. Wear something comfortable, but appropriate. Many people would define typical Broadway attire as "Semi-formal".
However, if you scored tickets to the opening night, you should consider dressing formal. The opening night is a big deal at Broadway. You'll see many people in tuxedos and long gowns. An opening night is considered a black-tie event.
In contrast, if you're going to a matinée, consider wearing something a little more casual.
