Believe it or not, there is a dress code that exists for Broadway musicals. Whether you're seeing Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, or Les Miserables, Broadway musicals are certainly an engagement that requires a certain expected form of clothing and attire. While much of it isn't formal, you may not want the unwanted attention of sticking out like a sore thumb. Purchasing Broadway tickets come with a special form of social expectation, like any other event. After all, would you want to show up to a semi-formal cocktail party wearing beach attire? Didn't think so.
During opening night, it's important to go to dress in nice clothing. Many people may be wearing formal clothing when going to opening night, since much of New York's high society will be attending. There will also be critics and various other prestigious people in attendance. It's important to gauge your comfort zone on what you should wear to opening night.
On any other night, going to a Broadway musical requires semi-formal clothing. Look nice, neat and clean.
If you're going to a Broadway musical that is a matinée, there's less of an expectation, especially during the day. You can get away with more casual clothing going to a Broadway musical.
