broadway musical

The whole notion of a Broadway musical based on a piece of crap like the original Xanadu film is risible. To begin with, the original movie was a rip-off of a Greek myth that somehow got transformed into an 80s roller disco musical starring Olivia Newton John as a wayward Greek muse, and Gene Kelly (who, at his age really should have known better). The mind reels when thinking about the plotting meetings that came up with that concept. Aside from being a financial failure, the original Xanadu was universally panned by the critics of the day, so it seems weird that some genius thought of turning this expensive turkey into a brand-new Broadway musical. But besides being well-reviewed, the Broadway musical version of Xanadu has also inspired cultish devotion from certain fans, like Brandon Purves, who's seen it a mind-boggling 86 times, or the group of a dozen or so people who paid extra to sit on the stage costumed as ancient Greeks! Because of its bouncy songs and more satirical script, the writers and producers have remade a former turkey into Broadway Gold!
