broadway musical

Broadway tickets for the new Mel Brooks musical, based on his 70s comedy classic, Young Frankenstein were among the most eagerly anticipated for any Broadway musical in the last five years, but unfortunately, the reviews are all over the map, and a lot of them are bad. The word is that the Broadway musical of Young Frankenstein is simply not as good as Brooks' last musical, based on The Producers, despite being written by Brooks and Thomas Meehan, who was his collaborator on the previous Broadway musical as well. Part of the problem may well lie with the cast of this ambitious and big-budget Broadway musical. Reportedly, Roger Bart, who plays Dr. Frankenstein, simply doesn't have the vocal presence to sell his songs, nor does the talented Megan Mullaly, playing Frankenstein's conceited and self-absorbed fiance. Based on the reviews of the show, about the only performer who does get into the wacky spirit of things is former Second City performer Andrea Martin, playing Frau Blucher, who sells her big tune, "He Vas My Boyfriend" with the same kind of balls-out elan that made her so funny on Second City. It's too bad that Brooks' most recent Broadway musical doesn't measure up, especially since even the cheapest Broadway tickets for this messterpiece are over $100.
